Outstation Car Rental from Chennai: How the Pricing Actually Works
Outstation quotes confuse people more than they should. One company says “₹25 per km,” another says “₹5,000 a day,” and a third quote arrives with a line about batta that nobody quite understands. The result is that comparing offers feels like comparing apples to autorickshaws.
It is actually simple once you know the four pieces. We will walk through them using real APJ CABS rates, then work out the cost of a trip step by step.
The Four Pieces of an Outstation Quote
- Per-km rate. Set by the vehicle. It covers the car, the chauffeur and fuel.
- Driver batta. A fixed amount per day (₹750 or ₹1,000 depending on the vehicle) to cover the driver’s meals and stay while away from base.
- Minimum 250 km per calendar day. If you drive less than 250 km in a day, you are still billed for 250. This is the part that surprises people most.
- Extras billed at actuals. Toll, parking and interstate permit tax are not in the per-km rate. GST is additional.

Worked Example: A One-Day Pondicherry Run
Pondicherry is roughly 150 km from Chennai, so a same-day round trip is around 300 km. Here is what that costs in an Innova Crysta G:
- Distance: 300 km is above the 250 km minimum, so you pay for 300 km
- 300 × ₹25 = ₹7,500
- Driver batta for one day = ₹750
- Subtotal = ₹8,250, then add toll, parking and GST
Same Trip, Different Cars
| 300 km day trip | Innova Crysta G | Innova Hycross | Toyota Camry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distance charge | 300 × ₹25 = ₹7,500 | 300 × ₹30 = ₹9,000 | 300 × ₹90 = ₹27,000 |
| Driver batta | ₹750 | ₹750 | ₹750 |
| Subtotal | ₹8,250 | ₹9,750 | ₹27,750 |
The gap between Crysta and Hycross is modest, about ₹1,500 over a 300 km day, which is why the choice usually comes down to comfort rather than cost. The Camry is a different category entirely: wonderful for one or two travellers, but not the car for budget distance.
When the Minimum Kilometre Rule Bites
Say you only drive 150 km in a day. You will still be billed for 250. In an Innova Crysta G that is 250 × ₹25 = ₹6,250 plus ₹750 batta, or ₹7,000. The rule exists because the car and driver are committed to you for the day regardless of the distance.
How to use this to your advantage: since you pay for 250 km anyway, make the day worth it. If you are billed for 250 km, add the extra stop. The marginal cost of a detour up to the minimum is zero.
Multi-Day Trips
The minimum applies per calendar day, so a two-day trip has a floor of 500 km and two days of batta. For a two-day trip in a Crysta G, the minimum is 500 × ₹25 = ₹12,500 plus 2 × ₹750 = ₹1,500, so ₹14,000 before toll and GST. If you cover more than 500 km you pay for the actual distance.
How to Compare Quotes Fairly
Ask every provider
- Is fuel included in the per-km rate?
- Is the minimum 250 km, or something else?
- How much is driver batta, and per day or per trip?
- Are toll and permit charges extra?
Watch out for
- A low per-km rate with a high daily minimum
- Fuel billed separately
- Night halt charges not mentioned
- Quotes that skip GST
The formula: (kilometres or the 250 km minimum, whichever is higher) × per-km rate, plus driver batta × days, plus toll, parking and GST. Share your route and dates with us and we will confirm the exact figure before you book.
